Down under he will explain current developments with the port. - David Miller is coming David did the initial port to the Sparc architecture, helped to thread the networking code and does other `cool stuff'. He'll be coming Down Under to explain the `cool stuff'. - Alan Cox is coming Yup, Alan is definately coming. If you don't know about Alan and all the hacking that he does you haven't really looked at the kernel code at all. Like David, Alan works on lots of `stuff'. He'll probably explain some of it as well while he is here. - Registrations are still a work in progress but we hope to have something functioning shortly - So you can start saving we now have a price list, and for those of you with corporate backing there are sponsership opportunies as well. Sydney, Australia -- Mon Aug 28 2000 -- Linux kernel developers Alan Cox and David Miller will both be speaking at linux.conf.au, a community focused conference taking place in Sydney, Australia in January 2001. This conference continues the tradition of the Conference of Australian Linux Users (CALU) which was held in July 1999 in Melbourne, Australia. linux.conf.au will mark Alan Cox's first visit to Australia. Cox has worked on almost every part of the Linux kernel, providing an early networking implementation and maintaining the 2.2 stable series of kernels. More recently he designed the Video for Linux kernel interface and has worked on modularising the sound drivers. His partner, Telsa Gwynne, has strongly supported the GNOME project, writing documentation and taming the bug report system. She intends to run a user/developer bug tracking forum at the conference. David Miller wrote the original Linux port to the SPARC family of processors, developed the MIPS port as a college intern at SGI, and worked on the team that developed the Cobalt Qube. At CALU in 1999, he presented a radical redesign of the way Linux handles incoming network packets. He has since implemented this in the version 2.3 development kernels. ABOUT LINUX.CONF.AU linux.conf.au is a technical conference taking place in Sydney, Australia in January 2001, concentrating on issues related to the development of Linux and Free Software. The conference is a collaborative effort by Linux Australia, the Sydney Linux Users Group and affiliated organisations. It is supported by the School of Computer Science and Engineering, University of New South Wales, and is a successor to the Conference for Australian Linux Users (CALU) held in Melbourne in July, 1999. ABOUT LINUX AUSTRALIA The Linux Organisation of Australia was founded to cater specifically to the needs of the Australian Linux community. Australia has unique problems that confront those attempting to organise and coordinate user groups and other support mechanisms because of its high urbanisation and large geographic distances between populated areas. Linux Australia hopes to assist in bringing the disparate pockets of Linux support into a single forum by encouraging and facilitating communication between these groups. ABOUT THE SYDNEY LINUX USERS GROUP The Sydney Linux Users Group holds free meetings, technical fests, and provides a forum for discussion about the use of GNU/Linux systems in Sydney. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES The University of New South Wales (UNSW) was the first site in Australia to make use of the Unix operating system. John Lions, of the School of Computer Science and Engineering, wrote "Source Code and Commentary on Unix level 6" in 1976 for use in teaching his operating systems class, and it quickly spread amongst Unix hackers worldwide. What this means for those of you who have already registered is that you may continue, guiltlessly, to encourage your friends and associates to accompany you. What this means for us (the organisers) is that we have allowed ourselves to recover peacefully from New Year's celebrations. Surely a winning situation all around. As a reminder, the 'early-bird' prices are: $99 for students $250 for hobbyists (LUG members, etc) $540 for the full Professional rate. After this weekend these registration prices will each be raised by a 'late fee' of $50. Please be assured that this is not an irrational act of spitefulness, we need to meet our own costs in a timely manner and your prompt payment is appreciated. We are nice people, after all :) Everyone attending will have full access to the four days of conference sessions, including all the tutorials, all the paper presentations, all the keynotes, all the Birds of a Feather meetings ... and the pub crawl. The prices really are as low as we could possibly make them. Remember that this is not a trade show, and this is not an 'Expo'. This is a developers conference, where you hear about free software from the people who wrote it and have ample opportunity to talk to them in detail about it. Full details of the topics to be presented are at: http://linux.conf.au/papers/ including people such as: John 'maddog' Hall of Linux International (dinner speaker) Alan Cox (UK): kernel guru, outlining secret plans for 2.4 Dave Miller (USA): kernel networking guru Andrew Tridgell (Oz): creator of Samba, rsync, hacking TiVo Rasterman (Oz, in USA): Enlightenment, hardware accelerated X11 Rik van Riel (NL, in Brazil): kernel memory management Richard Gooch (Oz, in Canada): devfs, and a new init system Registration information is at: http://linux.conf.au/register/ Online registration, for Visa, Mastercard and Bankcard is at: http://linux.conf.au/register/online/ A schedule of events (including social events!) is at: http://linux.conf.au/schedule/ We look forward to seeing you there! Of course the bank choose this particular week to perform upgrades and other things. Unsurprisingly not everything went to their plan. They have had running failures since Tuesday of this week with two outages greater than 12 hour outages. [*] I won't be applying the late fee until Monday morning (8th) so this is your last day to register at these prices. I've processed all registrations received by post as of 5th Jan as well as all faxes received till now. If you have not received an email from me yet you can safely assume I have not received your details. If you sent in your registration, it may be in the post and so long as it is postmarked before the 8th it will be processed at the normal price. If you have registered online you should have a receipt which confirms your registration. You'll know when your registration time is up because all the tickets will include a late fee. If the bank's system fail again we will still be applying the late fee regardless. If it does fail, your best bet is to send in a fax. I know, paper - ugh. But it doesn't seem as prone to errors as the Commonwealth Bank. Thanks, Anand [*] All from a faulty hard disk.
