*shrug* -- that is the standard and accepted way to go about it. I did it
that way for a recent bib and the result looks fine:

@nospam.INPROCEEDINGS{Ulusoy001,
author = "{\"Ozg\"ur} Ulusoy and Mehmet Baray",

Can you define what you mean by "ugly" ?
