I have a feeling that Sammy has already said a lot of this but I
find that they are the industry standard but by no way are they the best.
They have standardised the industry with an inferior environment that
did not allow for easy manipulation of data with anything other than
their own equipment. If you were to take UNIX systems you would see text
processing which allows the source to be edited by anything that can edit
text, whereas on the MS-DOS platform you see word prcessing where each
file can only be editied by its own editor.

I know that Lotus, Novell and all those other software providers
have unique file formats as well so this is probably not a good reason.
Also though Miscrosoft was involved in making the "PC" the standard and
in doing so have left such technologies as the apple and others behind
whilst the PC is only just breaking away from its own tradition and
incorporating features the apple has had for the last ten years or more.

I guess that the only reason for me to "hate" or at least not get on
with Microsoft is that they have taken over something that they never
did as well as others and have managed to make themselves the standard
where they lack things that should be standards.

As far as Bill Gates goes it is probably just a way of directing anger
towards a company to a specific individual...

I don't deny that they do the job, often I find myself using Word over
another word processor. But that doesn't mean they are the best and
the standard should be as close to the best as possible.

Maybe I'm just an idealist living in dreamland.
