Win 95 PPP (again)

After all the helpful hints last time I still could not get a PPP link up
and running from home to uni via modem.

Feel free to peruse my settings...

Network (Control Panel):
Only 2 items in the list:
Dialup Adapter - bindings - TCP/IP -> ticked
- advanced - IPX Header Compression -> Yes
TCP/IP - Obtain IP automatically
- all other tabs empty

Properties of my Uni connection item:
Server Type - protocol - "PPP: Win95,WinNT,Internet"
- 'enable software compression' - ticked
- TCP/IP - ticked
TCP/IP settings - IP & DNS - server assigned (have tried specifying
138.25.8/9.1)
- IP header compression - ticked
- use default gateway - ticked

Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong?

At the moment I range from getting a blank terminal window after dialup,
to the settings above which give the annex stuff, and choosing PPP from
the annex menu seems to work (prints out a sporadic stream of chars) but
when I click on the continue button on the terminal window it just pops
up a message (sometimes immediately, sometimes after 'verifying name &
password'), saying 'could not negotiate a compatible set of protocols' or
some such.

Jon.
