Re: [ProgSoc] Beer cell
A few thoughts on the matter (it has been about 10 years since I did any
serious chem).
1) can you choose different metals? You want one stable metal, one unstable
metal. Greater difference in stability=greater voltage. Can't exactly
remember what it was, but there was some kind of chart with potentials for
each metal.
Basic rule as you go down the Periodic Table, the elements become less
stable. As you go right of the Periodic Table, the elements become less
stable... What about using carbon rods? They're non-corrosive and they
still render reasonable conductivity...
2) maintenance: the unstable electrode will eventually be consumed, so will
need replacing. And the beer may saturate with ions too, needing periodic
replacement (I think)
See above about carbon rods... But yes, the beer will go flat... Perhaps
we can set a cascade set up of the cells so that the flat beer drains down
into a bucket and we refill the cell frolm the top with fresh bear every X
days?
3) that's all that comes to mind. I wonder if such a cell could be recharged?
Give it a try, but beware of H2 gas.
Wet cells like a beer cell tend to fail in terms of recharge.
