Ugh, in all fairness I haven't got a solution for it yet either, I just worked 
around it.  I went and did a chmod -R 777 on the whole share partition, since 
I have no particular need or desire to restrict it.  What I'd love is the 
ability to just use the vfat "umask" option, and declare at mount-level that 
all users can read/write the filesystem.
