So like, unless you're playing "guess who" or emailing people within
progsoc, I'm curious as to how any sort of progsoc affiliation would be
of benefit.

The only scenario I can see is where a system similar to that described
in your first email is setup, where email won't be feasted upon by
hungry spam filters. (Anonymous senders I suppose could be rejected
based on spam)
