Sony would be foolish to try to do that, as that would introduce 'Sony' 
into common usage and consequently they would loose the exclusive rights 
to their own brand as a trademark.
The same problem applies to "Googling" ... "xeroxing" ... putting things 
in an "esky", snuggling in up in your "doona", or "hoovering" the carpets.
