Ive always hated the term public interest in the same way I hate the term general public.
Hate is such a strong word...

It assumes there is a common goal that we all strive for.
Isn't there? ;)

The broadest common interest that I believe most people
to share is the me factor. Selfishness drives all aspects of human nature, even our reaction to advertisements.
When you're a little older, and wiser, and, "ahem", more emotionally
intelligent (wink), I think you'll recognise that there's a better way
to go about serving your own interests than, um, "serving your own
interests".
...but that's OK. You do what you to do. This whole "humanity" thing is
rather a bit larger than you, and I, and, er, ProgSoc.
Did you know there are at least 3.5 billion people on this rock who are
working right *now*? Starting to feel a little small..?

Of course, ads are getting more and more pervasive in order to convert the negative-passive. So in a commercial sense at least, apathy is actually the key the free will.
Eh? Start by explaining how "negative active" does not have free will...

"The problem is choice."

What was the question again?
Nevermind. ;)
