Dear UTS Clubs, Societies and Students.

Hi! My name is Nix and I'm the Vice president and Education Officer of the
Students Association.

Since VSU (Voluntary Student Unionism) the lack of campus culture has been a
huge concern. Clubs, events, and essential services at university have faced
huge funding cuts. Because of VSU some universities no longer have any
campus life or a student organisation. Services like sporting facilities,
childcare, student media, healthcare and counselling have been underfunded
and understaffed.

Why am I telling you this?

You may have heard through the media about the new student service fee
proposal that is being put to the senate. The fee, if passed will be capped
at each university's discretion. Universities may charge up to $250 which if
the student wishes can be added their HECs debt. The money accumulated by
the university will go towards a series of benchmarks for student services,
advocacy and culture.

It is very important that we as students help make sure that this proposal
is passed so that universities can begin to revive culture they once had.

What can you do?

First of all, make sure every one of your members receives this e-mail and
knows about this campaign.

I'll be going to as many union events possible over the next week to
collect signatures on our Scrap VSU petition and to get students to sign
some letters to indecisive senators. I will also be wearing a massive scrap
VSU sign around my neck. The objective is to get as many photos of UTS clubs
with this sign as possible, so that the photos may be sent to senators and
MPs all over Australia, to give the message that we care about our campus
and our university life being more than just lectures, classes and lab time.

Similar activities are being undertaken at many universities across
Australia.

In 2005, over 10, 000 students in NSW mobilised to try and stop the VSU
legislation getting through the senate. Now its our chance to get rid of
it!!!!

We need all the help we can get, from you, for you, for us

The letters and petitions will be in a Scrap VSU pack inside your club
locker. Please take the time to get them signed and return them to the Scrap
VSU box located at the reception of the Students' Association (opposite the
union desk).

If you want to know more or help out please e-mail me.
