The convention is fairly intuitive, but the following RFC should
describe it.

If you're referring to naming in terms of service offering (which I
don't think is covered in the RFC) then the convention is to use
CNAMEs in the form of <applic-level-protocol>.subdomain.<etc>, where
application level protocols are services such as ftp, mail, gopher ...
etc. Obviously the CNAME points to a physical machine. FTI: Bellovin
suggests these should be encoded in network layer addresses in IPng.
