the home pages page is aactually generated by a quick script that prints
a list of all users with ~/public_html readable by the script (and
therefore by the web server, hence the WWW).

the idea of using a script is that it wouldn't have to be manually
updated by some poor schmuck.

surely anyone with a readable public_html directory has
it set up to be just that - public. off the top of my head, i can't
think of any reason to be worried about having the link announced that
doesn't somehow contravene the AUP.

maybe the nameless folks could suggest some reason why they feel
clandestine home pages are required?
