Hehe. Ok. Thinking that my needs of a portable mp3 player might help
Joseph think about it I'll list them now (in no particular order):

* User replacable battery (standard battery ie AA or AAA even better)
because I think it's dumb to have to send the device in to the
manufacturer to get its batter replaced.
* Mountable as a USB drive because it would allow me to use it as an
emergency storage medium on prettymuch any modern OS without having to
install extra bits on the host PC. It would also allow me to use the
many many filemanagement tools available to manage my mp3s (in my
  case, bash ;)
* No fscking joystick controller. Personal HATE HATE HATE HATE. I've
used sony ericcson mobiles and I find them loathesome.
* Gotta play what I consider to be the common music formats (this
  includes ogg)
* FM Radio because there are were times in the past where I chose to
listen to something I did not choose to listen to.
* Pocketsized because I should not need a backpack for it :)
* Decent UI design. This is highly subjective but basically it must not
look fugly to my eye and be easy for me (not necessarily you :) to
use. Eyecandy is also a nice-to-have. ;) This also includes a decent
display setup. 2gb thumbsize music devices are nice but unless you
always want random shuffle, you're gonna need to have a good way to
  search through your songs.
* Good battery life. It must survive a decent day out (from morning to
night) on a single battery charge. This can be tempered somewhat if
the first point. Spare batteries. :)
* And, obviously, the sound that comes out of it has to be of a decent
  quality (for me ;)
* User replaceable storage media (not seen by me anywhere yet and it's
not a must-have but having a small player and a few compact flash
cartridges in your pocket would be nice).

That's all that comes to mind atm. I'm sure I'm missing something but
it's a start. The last item is optional until I see it in the wild. The
rest aren't and the iPod (for example) fails around half of them.
