Bloody hell. Here's where it comes down. 128kbps is crap on MP3 with
CBR. But 128kbps with MP3 and VBR is very close to transparent -- for
large selections of music and for large selections of people. And not to
mention portable listening environments :)
And ignoring your choice of encoder.
Of course, assuming no overhead from file systems, file format framing,
etc...
Marketing is so misleading at the best of times!!
It's important to have honest statistics in life. You're undervaluing
that. When people tell you the dangers of drowning vs sharks, or cars vs
planes, or just something consumer-driven like how much better life is if
you carry around your portable music with lossy compression -- that's an
eye-opener when you first hear it. You can't go round promoting to
everyone that lossless compression or uncompressed CD-quality audio is the
only solution for everyone. Take some reasonable assumptions, and tell
them that 1,000 songs in a tiny flash-based player is really possible.
