Surely this is the point of contention?

I don't think either of you will ever come to an agreement, because from my understanding of John's argument he fundamentally disagrees with you. Of course, he is free to tell me I'm wrong (which I suspect may be the case). My personal opinion probably sides more with John in that I agree with you when you say that "sqr(x) = x*x is a declaration", but I so what? What can you do with such a declaration? It has no meaning on its' own. Everything is intrinsically a declaration; you declare that a command should be run, just as you declare a variable is of a certain type of stores a particular value. The only difference being, the former declaration requires a state to be passed to it in order to achieve anything worthwhile.

Does that make sense or have I become lost in the wordy arguments?
